Hong Kong Dessert Tim Pan Kor Kor @ SS2

3 February 2010

Just hot out of the oven at max opened 6 months ago in SS2 is Hong Kong Desset (Tim Pan Kor Kor). Ironically, it is on the same row & same block as KTZ or better known as Kei Tak Sek which also serves Hong Kong desserts, I wonder why.

Anyhow, if my memory serves me right, this place was very packed when it first opened end 2009. Last night when I decided to give this place a visit, it was about three quarters full, still not too bad I suppose. The decor is simple & bright, a reminiscence of the previous cafe which occupied the same lot. All of the chairs and tools also appeared to be bought from Ikea. Back to the food, the mixed tong yuen that I ordered at RM6 which came with 6 pieces was very fine & bursting with the fillings like sweet groundnuts & black sessame paste. The soup or syrup that comes with it is great too with quite a tangy ginger taste in it. Apart from that, the Durian Ice at RM6.50 ordered was flavourful & creamy with just the right amount of milk, until now I am still wondering if it is actual fruits blended in or concentrate / powder.

Same row as KTZ or Kei Tak Sek facing the SS2 Medan Selera or SS2 Wai Sek Kai

Prince cafe new sets @ SS2

tea time snacks11 January 2010

The latest outlet to join in the craze of sets & more sets is Prince cafe in SS2. Not only they have breakfast from 9am to 11am & tea time sets from 3pm to 6pm, but they also have supper sets from 10pm till closing. As some may already know, they have had lunch sets as far as I can remember Prince cafe existed.

The drinks like coffee & tea are a far cry from Wong Kok’s & the food is pretty decent too for most items except the fried noodle with seafood sauce which was just mediocre & not much ingredients in it. Thus far, the Pork Chop burger in “Macau” style was tasty with a chunky piece of porkchop in it & the egg sandwich was great with lots of eggs in it. I also did remembered that breakfast & supper setsthe cheese baked rice was on par with Kim Gary’s standard too, can anyone comment on that now?

Sadly, I do not remember seeing similar promotions in the Metro Prima branch in Kepong, thus, I would just put this promo applicable to the SS2 branch unless someone could let me know if is the same elsewhere. Prices for tea time snacks range from Rm4.90 to RM9.90 which comes with coffee, tea, lemon tea or soft drinks. Prices from breakfast & supper sets on the other hand start from RM3.90 to RM6.90 which also comes with the same drinks

Highly reasonable Breakfast and Lunch Set @ Ali Cafe

breakfast sets & all day sets11 Jan 2010

As one of our very first stop to re-evaluate the inflation and food standard in KL for year 2010, we revisited the common coffee brand’s cafe - Ali Cafe for their meal sets, which still priced from RM3.90 for mee siam set to RM 6.20 for a western set.

We sticked to the breakfast toast set priced at RM4.20 (priced at RM3.90 months ago). It still comes with:

  • Brown toast with butter (yes, not magerine :p) and authentic home made runny kaya
  • Two Omega soft boiled eggs
  • Signature AliCafe coffee / Alitea (hot/cold)

Big thumbs up for upkeeping the food and service quality with one of the MOST affordable & reasonable cafe price these days while there is another big round of  commodities chained price hike coming up…

We bump into an in-house training for a big group conversed in BM during our visit, probably for the several upcoming outlets.

On top of the breakfast sets, there are all-day sets too all day setswhich come with a free cincau starting from RM4.90 for a porridge set to RM9.90 for a chicken chop

Char Chan Teng’s promos

tea time30 December 2009

While still fresh in my mind, I thought of having a quick review on Wong Kok Char Chan Teng. I do not know if is just Wong Kok or other places having that many promotions, but Wong Kok has 3 main promos, which are breakfast sets all at RM3.99, lunch sets at mostly RM9.90 & some at RM11.90 & tea iteams at 30% discount apart from the other anytime sets like cheese baked rice.

As previously reviewed more than a year ago, things have not changed much, the coffee & tea is not really tasty & so is the food. However, one particular item, the bacon & egg with noodles & coffee breakfast set keeps making me go back for more as you cannot really go wrong breakfast setwith bacon stuff. The bacon is cooked just nice & juicy & so is the egg. Between noodles & shanghai noodles, I would prefer the noodles as it is tastier. Sadly, the ham I just tried is not tasty either.

Buy 1 Free 1 handrolls @ Sakae and Senjyu

sizzling unagi
23 November 2009

Last year I did review about a similar promotion as Sakae Sushi for Citibank credit card members. I am not sure if this is something like a long term promotion, but is still worth mentioning as there has been sister outlets of Sakae springing up too. Apart from the affordable or budget Sakae Sushi, they have the premium Senjyu Sushi, hip & happening Sakae Izakaya & Sakae Teppanyaki in Penang. This time, as long as the outlet serves handrolls, it is buy 1 free 1!

On top of the promotion for Citibank, there is also a set lunch promotion for everyone too! Put the service aside which was rather mediocre, the food & presentation at teppanyaki chicken setSenjyu is definitely a notch above the ordinary Sakae Sushi outlets.

Set lunches start from RM9.90 & on top of the free green tea, they offer free sparking vinegar juice too! Apparently, possibly due to the lack of patrons during lunch time, the staff did not know how to serve the sizzling unagi as they initially did not bring the rice until I showed them rice is supposed to be included. Another wierd note was that when I asked for the free vinegar juice, they also replied by asking if I wanted it. Anyhow, the chicken had just the right tenderness & juiciness while the unagi was fresh & tasty together with the yummy sticky japanese rice. The handrolls also had some slight premium variations from the standard sakae sushi like the smelt fish handroll with cheese. Here are handrolls & sparking vinegar juicethe pictures to whet your appetite!

Best authentic flavour of Apom/Apam Balik @ Taman Yulek

Malays call it Apom/Apam Balik and Chinese/Nyonya call this ‘Ban Chiang/Chen/Chang/Jian Kuih’ which is simply a local pancake originally comes with groundnut & sugar, commonly found at night and morning market. There are 2 types: thick and crispy thin.

Apom / Apam Balik from YulekHonestly I am not fond of this local staple nor groundnuts but this one really got me into it since then. From the very first bite, you will instantly notice the difference this stall has to offer. The home-grounded groundnuts are perfectly roasted unlike the commercial one. This explains why the fillings are exceptionally strong & full bodied. On top of that, you won’t be disappointed by the amount of fillings they used. The picture should tell it all…

My last piece of advice to you is try to go there early if you want to avoid the long queue which starts even before night fall, people usually order in big bulk!
